What is Muay Thai?

The Art of Eight Limbs - Thailand's oldest and most effective martial art.

The Art of Eight Limbs

Muay Thai – often simply called Thai boxing – is known as "The Art of Eight Limbs" and is Thailand's national martial art with over 2,000 years of history. Unlike other combat sports, Muay Thai uses the entire body as a weapon: fists, elbows, knees, and shins form the eight points of contact.

This comprehensive fighting style makes Muay Thai one of the most effective stand-up combat arts in the world. The techniques were originally developed for the battlefield and imitate ancient weapons of war - arms move like a sword, shins strike like a staff, elbows and knees like a battle axe.

Muay Thai - The Art of Eight Limbs

"The body becomes the weapon - every movement has meaning, every technique tells a story."

History & Philosophy

The origins of Muay Thai date back over 2,000 years to the training techniques of the Siamese army. Soldiers needed a fighting style that utilized their entire body when they lost their weapons in battle.

Wai Kru Ram Muay

Traditions & Respect

The Wai Kru Ram Muay is a ritual dance performed before every fight. Fighters circle the ring counterclockwise, praying in each corner. Then follows the Ram Muay, a choreographed dance to traditional Thai music.

The Mongkhon (headband) and Pra Jiad (armbands) are traditional elements worn during fights. They are believed to bring good luck to the wearer and carry cultural significance beyond practical protection.

Mutual respect is the foundation of Muay Thai. After every round and match, fighters show respect through embraces and handshakes.
